How many metres in a 1 kg spool?
Short answer
A 1 kg spool of 1.75 mm filament holds roughly 300 to 400 metres, depending on the material. We work it out from the filament's density: lighter materials give more length for the same weight.
Typical length per kg by material
The middle value across the filaments we list for each material. Always check the range for your own filament.
| Material | Length per kg |
|---|---|
| PLA Polylactic acid | ≈ 335 m |
| PETG Polyethylene terephthalate glycol | ≈ 327 m |
| TPU Thermoplastic polyurethane | ≈ 344 m |
| ABS Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene | ≈ 400 m |
| ASA Acrylonitrile styrene acrylate | ≈ 389 m |
| PA6 Nylon 6 (polyamide 6) | ≈ 365 m |
| PA12 Nylon 12 (polyamide 12) | ≈ 412 m |
| PC Polycarbonate | ≈ 346 m |
| PP Polypropylene | ≈ 462 m |
| PCTG Polycyclohexylenedimethylene terephthalate glycol | ≈ 338 m |
| PEI Polyetherimide | ≈ 327 m |
| PET Polyethylene terephthalate | ≈ 310 m |
| HIPS High-impact polystyrene | ≈ 400 m |
| TPE Thermoplastic elastomer | ≈ 346 m |
Guide
How we work it out
Length = weight ÷ (density × cross-section area). For 1.75 mm filament the cross-section is about 0.024 cm², so a 1 kg spool of PLA at 1.24 g/cm³ holds about 335 metres.
Real spools vary a little, because the diameter isn't perfectly even and the stated weight is a minimum. Use our spool weight calculator to see how much is left on a spool you've used.
Length per kg questions
How many metres in a 1 kg spool of PLA?
About 335 metres of 1.75 mm PLA.
How many metres in a 1 kg spool of PETG?
About 330 metres of 1.75 mm PETG.
How long is 1 kg of 2.85 mm filament?
Much shorter: around 125 metres of PLA, because each metre is thicker and heavier.
How do I know how much filament is left on my spool?
Weigh it and subtract the empty spool's weight. Our spool weight calculator has empty weights for hundreds of filaments.
