Empty spool weights
Weigh a spool on a kitchen scale, take away the weight of the empty spool, and you know how much filament is left. Here are the empty spool weights for each brand and spool size we have data for, with a calculator that does the sum for you.
Across 85 brands, most empty 1 kg spools weigh 140–250 g; the middle is 217 g.
How much filament is left?
Pick your filament, then weigh the spool.
Enter the empty spool weight and what the spool weighs now.
That is less than the empty spool. Check both weights.

≈ marks a typical figure from SpoolmanDB. Where a brand uses more than one spool, the range is shown underneath.
How it works
How to check how much filament is left
- Take the spool off the printer and weigh it on a kitchen or postal scale, in grams.
- Find the empty weight for that brand and spool size below, or pick the filament in the calculator.
- Take the empty spool weight away from what you weighed. The rest is filament.
Kitchen scales are usually accurate to a gram or two, which is plenty: a metre of 1.75 mm PLA weighs about 3 g.
Why spool weights vary
The same brand often uses more than one kind of spool. Plastic and cardboard spools weigh different amounts, spool designs change over time, and bigger spools are heavier. Where a brand's spools vary, the table shows the most common weight and the range, so choose the exact filament in the calculator for the closest figure.
Spool weight questions
How do I know how much filament is left on my spool?
Weigh the spool, then take away the weight of the empty spool. Use the calculator on this page: pick your filament and spool size, enter what the spool weighs now, and it shows the grams and roughly how many metres are left.
How much does an empty 1 kg filament spool weigh?
It depends on the brand and spool type. Most empty 1 kg spools weigh somewhere between about 120 g and 260 g, so the difference matters. Check the table for your brand.
Why does the same brand list different spool weights?
Many brands use more than one spool, such as plastic and cardboard versions, or have changed their spool design over the years. Picking the exact filament in the calculator gives the most accurate figure.
What does the ≈ sign mean?
It marks a typical weight for that brand and spool size from SpoolmanDB, rather than a figure listed for that specific filament. It is usually close, but weighing an empty spool of your own gives the exact number.
How accurate is this?
Usually to within a few grams. Spools vary slightly between batches and scales are rarely perfect, so leave a margin before starting a long print.
How many metres of filament are left?
The calculator estimates it from the filament's density and diameter. As a rule of thumb, 100 g of 1.75 mm PLA is about 33 m, and the lighter the material, the more metres you get per gram.
Where does the spool weight data come from?
From the Open Filament Database and SpoolmanDB, both open, community-maintained databases. SpoolmanDB also powers Spoolman, a popular tool for tracking spools. See the credits for both.
