Not sure? An open printer such as a Bambu Lab A1 uses about 100 W printing PLA; a smart plug with energy monitoring shows exactly what yours draws. Your bill shows your unit rate. The Ofgem price cap rate for October to December 2026 is 26.32p.

How the cost is worked out

Filament: the grams the print uses, divided by the grams on the spool, times the spool price. A 48 g print from an £18, 1 kg spool costs 48 ÷ 1000 × £18 = 86p.

Electricity: the printer's power in kilowatts, times the hours, times your unit rate. A 100 W printer running for four hours uses 0.4 kWh, about 11p at 26.32p per kWh.

Failed prints, test pieces and the odd bit of wasted filament at the end of a spool all add up, so if you're pricing prints to sell, add a margin on top.
